What a nearby-device scan can say

Some smart glasses broadcast Bluetooth signals that a nearby phone can observe. Depending on the device and conditions, a local scan can indicate that a compatible device may be in range.

That is useful context, deliberately limited. A Bluetooth signal cannot prove that a camera is recording or identify the wearer. It also cannot guarantee that every pair of smart glasses will be detectable.

The limits protect the purpose

A nearby-device tool could easily become a system for tracking people, repeating the privacy problem in another form. Responsible awareness keeps the signal local, minimises retention and avoids tying an observation to a person's identity.

Those limits are the point. The tool gives a bystander a little more situational information; it does not create a record of who was nearby.

Awareness needs restraint

Smart-glasses awareness should avoid counter-surveillance. Tools and norms can help people notice a change around them without collecting everyone involved.

Local processing narrows the data path, but it does not turn an observation into proof of recording. A nearby signal may come from an idle compatible product, a device unavailable to the scanner or a broadcast pattern the tool does not recognise. The interface and policy should say so.

The observer needs restraint too. Storing device identifiers, mapping repeated sightings or inferring a wearer's identity would create a second monitoring system. Keeping observations local and short-lived preserves awareness without creating a record of movement.
