The Bystander Who Cannot Leave the Room

A technician issued glasses by an employer did not shop for them, read a comparison or weigh the camera against the price. The device arrived with the shift.

Consumer framing assumes the wearer chose. Without that choice, the wearer may not control what the device does, yet remains the only visible person in the room. Across from them may be a colleague, patient, customer at a counter or warehouse worker two aisles over. None can leave for the duration.

Leaving is a weak remedy in public and may not exist at work. Asking a colleague to stop recording can carry a cost shaped by the power of the wearer's department. Asking an employer can turn a request into a grievance.

Trade coverage tracks platforms and readiness. XR Today has written about what is arriving in Android XR through 2026, and the conversation is moving from curiosity to rollout. Deployment guides explain how to manage devices as endpoints. They rarely explain what happens to people those endpoints face all day.

A sign at reception can announce that recording may occur. An employer is not a venue. Before purchase, the buyer must ask where footage goes, how long it lives, who reviews it and what happens when a worker objects.

Available deployment descriptions provide limited answers to the last question. They have retention policies but do not explain what an objection accomplishes. A data-handling policy without a route to object leaves the workforce without a practical response.

Procurement also has to distinguish the worker wearing the device from people in its field of view. A contract may cover the employer's access to footage while leaving colleagues, patients and customers with no route to ask about capture. Both groups need an explanation of the functions and a way to raise a concern.

The test is whether a worker can decline or limit capture without risking ordinary participation in the job. Defined zones, recording states, retention controls and a named decision-maker may be required. A poster cannot supply them when deployment power remains inside the reporting line.
