The gesture was doing quiet work
For most of the history of cameras in public, operating one was visible. Someone raised a phone, framed a shot, held still for a second. Nobody designed that as a privacy feature. It worked as one anyway, because the act of capturing looked different from the act of standing there.
Camera glasses already compressed that gesture into a touch on the temple. Wrist-worn controls that read small finger movements go further, and the design community has spent the season working out which input model wins. UX Collective published a piece on where wearable controls are heading after Meta Connect 2025, and the conversation there is worth following, because the winner of that argument will decide how much of an interaction remains observable from outside it.
A win for the wearer can be a loss for the room
Input in this category is judged almost entirely by whether the wearer finds it fluid. Fluid here means quick, unobtrusive, available while carrying groceries. It also means imperceptible to everyone else, and those are the same property described from two positions.
A bystander standing two metres away has never had much to work with. Until now there was at least a hand moving toward a face. Remove that and the whole burden of notice falls onto a small light, and the limits of that light are already well understood.
Legibility belongs in the input spec
If a capture action can be performed with a movement nobody can see, the design question is no longer how bright the indicator should be. It is whether an interaction model that hides operation from the room should ship at all in a device worn in shared space, and if it does, what has to compensate for the loss.
The test we would put in the spec, before the visual design starts, is whether a stranger nearby can tell that an action occurred. Most current proposals fail it. The honest position is that nobody has shown how to make input legible to the room without making it worse for the wearer, and that tension is unresolved. Pretending otherwise is how a single LED ended up carrying an argument it was never strong enough to hold.
